β€œ[American Doctor] is a necessary watch because it dares its audience not to look away, forcing the question not only of whose story is told, but whose deaths matter and make headlines.” – Murtada Elfadl, Variety
The American doctors in Poh Si Teng's documentary are three men who volunteer their services during the war in Gaza, performing surgeries at the Nasser Medical Complex, risking their lives to save their patients. Feroze Sidhwa is a trauma surgeon from California whose Zoroastrian parents emigrated to the US from Pakistan. Thaer Ahmad is an ER specialist from Chicago, a Palestinian American born and living in the US. Mark Perlmutter is a Jewish orthopedic surgeon from North Carolina.
But arguably as important as their medical interventions is their determination to share their experience with the world. (Israel has barred foreign journalists from Gaza since October 2023.) They give interviews and public talks about their dire working conditions, the lack of basic medical supplies, the intentional killing of civilians including children, and the deliberate bombing of hospitals and targeting of medical practitioners. Sidwhwa and Perlmutter have co-authored an op-ed titled "As Surgeons, We Have Never Seen Such Cruelty Like Israel's Genocide in Gaza."
Like its subjects, American Doctor understands the grave importance of bearing witness, as well as the critical questions raised by that role: what to show and not to show, whose stories get told, who gets to tell them, and whose voices matter? - SIFF
