Join us for a community day featuring free admission to Knowing the West. Throughout the day visitors of all ages are invited to view the exhibition and experience the Museum as a welcoming space for creativity, reflection, and connection. Western wear encouraged!
Schedule of Activities
Museum Park (near Welcome Center), 9 am–noon: Pop-Up Horse Portrait Studio
Led by NCSU Reedy Creek Equine Farm and 4-H
Meet and draw from live horse models with award-winning youth artists of 4-H

East Building, 10 am–4 pm: Artist Demonstrations and Hands-On Art Making
Experience art up close with demonstrations of leather sculpting, beadwork, basket weaving, wet-plate collodion photography, printmaking, and more
Bring arts of the West to life at hands-on art-making stations
Show off your moves and join in lively line-dancing sessions
Enjoy stories around the campfire
This event is part of the nationwide commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Through art making, performances, and community activities with local artists, visitors can explore the myths and realities of the American West and consider how its diverse stories continue to shape our understanding of freedom, identity, and belonging today.
