Into the Weeds: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Columbia’s New Recycling RulesCelebrate America Recycles Day by becoming an expert on how to recycle right here in Columbia. Recycling correctly has never been more important than it is now, as the city rebuilds its recycling program following the devastating tornado of spring 2025.
Improper recycling can ruin entire loads at the recycling plant. When we don’t recycle materials properly, it can lead to a range of problems: damaged equipment, injured workers, slowed processing, higher sorting costs, and lower-quality recyclables. Contaminated recyclables can’t be sold to mills or turned into new materials—defeating the purpose of recycling entirely.
At this event, you’ll have the chance to engage directly with Columbia’s volunteer Recycling Ambassadors and learn how to correctly recycle (or dispose of) the 20 most commonly confused items in the waste stream—and why they are or aren’t recyclable.
If you've ever wanted clear, no-nonsense answers about what goes where, this is the program for you!
