AMBIGUOUSLY GAY AMYGDALAS
About this Event
Participants in this free programming will be introduced to ways that scent has been utilized as a social signifier for queer communities and as an approach to defining and caring for non-normative conceptions of self—from lesbianism in the 1940s to gender fluid fantasies of a glamorous boudoir; from Brooklyn warehouse parties to Berlin night clubs; Gay Liberation histories and 1980s alt-masculinities; Britney Spears fandoms to the signature perfume of trans nightlife superstar Amanda Lepore. This exploration will examine the ways perfumes have defied gender codes across periods and articulated desire beyond the explicitly visible or named.
The publication for Delightful Semaphores, including a contribution from Morris, will be available for purchase during the event.
