——— BARKER (UK/DE)As a musician, DJ and co-founder of the Leisure System label, Sam Barker has helped push the boundaries of dance music in Berlin, looking beyond 4/4 techno to explore left-field sound design and rhythmic complexity. His approach – both solo and in the duo Barker & Baumecker with longtime Panorama Bar resident nd_baumecker – combines bass music tropes, breakbeat, dub and ambient elements while keeping a strong connection to the dancefloor.
This vision has guided Barker & Baumecker’s EPs, LPs, and remixes for Ostgut Ton (including the 2016 LP Turns), as well as Barker’s curatorial direction for Leisure System, one of the longest club night residencies at Berghain. Having released records by Dopplereffekt and early EPs by Objekt and Visionist, Barker has long operated on techno’s periphery while seeking to shift its center. His EP Debiasing marked his solo debut on Ostgut Ton, questioning what is “necessary” to maintain dancefloor momentum, while his 2019 solo album Utility offered a playful but non-ironic exploration of utilitarian and transhumanist ideas.
A classically trained musician, British-born and Berlin-based Barker is also an instrument designer and builder under the name Voltek, combining coding with analogue, electric and acoustic construction. Most recently, he collaborated with Underground Resistance’s Ray 7 on a sonic architectural exploration of Detroit’s empty factories using self-programmed analogue percussion instruments.
