Amatl Club — Recycled Papermaking
About this Event
Paper holds memory. Learn to make it from scratch.
Amatl Club hosts a recycled papermaking workshop at Ave 50 Studio as part of the programming for Codex of the Migrant / Codex del Fuego, our current exhibition curated by Maritza Torres.
Amatl is the bark paper used to create pre-Columbian codices — the ancient books that recorded the histories, calendars, and knowledge of Mesoamerican civilizations, many of which were destroyed by colonial forces. This exhibition takes its name and spirit from that tradition: making records that are meant to last, that resist erasure, that carry what must not be forgotten.
In this workshop, participants will learn the process of recycled papermaking — transforming discarded material into something new and lasting. No experience necessary. All ages and skill levels welcome.
