To close the Christmas season, Collegium Musicum Moscow presents Amahl and the Night Visitors. January 9 & 10, 7:30PM, and Trintiy Reformed Church in Moscow, ID. Amahl and the Night Visitors was the first opera written for television, premiering on Christmas Eve 1951 as the first episode of NBC’s Hallmark Hall of Fame. Various productions were broadcast every year thereafter through 1965.
The opera is in English and approximately 50 minutes long. It is in the tradition of the medieval miracle play and centers on the Three Kings on their journey to find the Christ child. Along the way, they stop for shelter at the home of a poor widow and her crippled son, Amahl. The beautiful music and the delightful story are all presented as if through the eyes of Amahl; that is to say, through the eyes of a child. This gives the story a fresh and fantastical quality.
