About this Event
The Kumbuka-Nia Collective was developed to provide an opportunity for mutual education and collective work through faith. By using the Swahili word kumbuka, we celebrate our mission to claim and reclaim our individual memory. We seek to reeducate, reinform and relearn the importance of cultural identity through memory and remembrance. The word nia in Swahili means purpose and determination. The name Kumbuka-Nia Collective represents our determination to claim and reclaim one’s individual memory through awareness, education and research.
The Alzheimer’s Association® is partnered with the Faith-Based Consortium on Equity in Alzheimer’s and Other Dementias: The Kumbuka-Nia Collective to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s disease among communities of African descent. By working together, we can provide opportunities for all those affected to access care and support services, engage in research and advance advocacy.
Purple Sabbath is designed to educate members of the faith community about Alzheimer’s and all other dementia. Attendees will learn about the impact of Alzheimer’s disease in our community, how to recognize the signs of Alzheimer’s, the importance of early detection, and how to access care and support resources offered by the Association.
This event is free and open to the public. Registration is highly encouraged. To register via phone, please call (800) 272-3900.
