About this Event
The aluminum can industry is growing in the U.S., with several new aluminum rolling mills and beverage can manufacturing plants coming on-line in the next few years. This course is focused on understanding the materials and processes that are important to the can making industry. Specifically, the course discusses common alloys, microstructure evolution during rolling, and how the process can affect quality aspects such as defects, earing behavior, and tensile properties. The course instructor is Dr. Scott Goodrich, who recently retired from Constellium after an illustrious career.
The course is idea for: Process Engineers, Quality Managers, and Metallurgists in the can sheet rolling or can making industries
Course topics include:
- Introduction to the can manufacturing process and the technical requirements for can sheet
- Basic metallurgical principles for aluminum can sheet
- Introduction to aluminum alloys 3104 and 5182
- Can sheet manufacturing process
- Effects of rolling and annealing on microstructure and properties (including earing)
- Relationships between product metallurgy and gauge/flatness control
- Summary of typical defects found in can sheet stock
The class will be taught in-person with an option for virtual attendance.
Fees include course materials and lunch for each day.
