Skateboarders have a long tradition of being visual artists and expressing their unique view of life in many different ways and media, on and off their beloved rolling transporter!
Glen A. Stallings's skate shop Altered Skates of America, located in University City’s Delmar Loop, was ground zero for St. Louis skateboarding in the 1980s through 2004. Glen became known as “Coach” to so many skaters who were on his shop team, Team Onion, but also to anyone who had an interest in skateboarding. Glen was there for them, organizing contests, professional skate demos and general good will to the skateboarding community. His historic indoor skatepark installation is still located on the 3rd floor of the City Museum as it was in 2004 when his shop closed. An accomplished skater himself, he also has an artistic side and will have paintings and other items on display.
Jonathan Harms, along with Glen, has been skateboarding since the 1970s and still skates parks, ramps, slalom, downhill and freestyle. Beginning in the early 1980s, he also photographed countless sessions with his fellow skaters. The photos Jonathan took in the '80s and '90s helped document the vibrant skateboarding scene in St. Louis and the Midwest. His keen eye and knowledge produced an awe-inspiring collection of lost or forgotten skate spots along with the talented skaters as his subject. Jonathan will have a small portion of his work on display.
Dana Smith started skateboarding in 1986 and by 1996 had shifted his artistic expression into painting. After traveling on the west coast and beyond, he settled in his favorite place on earth, St. Louis, MO. Since that time, his paintings have focused on the people and places that make St. Louis unique and special. Primarily working in acrylic and spray paint, he uses snapshots taken on a whim to create paintings of the city of St. Louis as he sees and experiences it.

Please join us on Saturday, July 25 from 5pm-9pm at Hoffman LaChance Contemporary for an opening of artwork created by skateboarders. Work will be on display until Thursday, July 30 with a closing from 3pm-8pm or by appointment.
