ALTER-Nut Awakening

6:30pm Thursday Nov. 19th and Friday Nov. 20th at Chattanooga Theatre Centre.
This Alternative Nutcracker Ballet is a retelling of the traditional two-act tale - now through a more relatable lens. The ALTER-Nut Awakening explores our fragmented society, obsession with devices, and the need for more resilient bonds. Leaving behind Victorian themes, these newly choreographed performances confront our current lived experience. Beloved characters, such as Clara, Fritz, and Drosselmeyer are depicted in the present as a parody of screen addiction. Gaining new perspective through the Place of Presence in Act II with the help of some reimagined iconic roles, like “Guiding Light” and “Sweetness + Joy”, the Siblings return to kinship, meaningful relationships and collective experiences.
Ballet ESPRIT’S full student body, stunning Principal guest dance artists from within and outside of ESPRIT Arts Collective are accompanied by Chattanooga Strings under the talented direction of Ben VanWinkle. We are honored to set the tone with Chattanooga native John Lancaster as the beloved Heir Drosselmeyer, returning to stage after decades of professional Modern Dance AND decades of retirement.
Save Tuesday Nov. 17th for the Gala and Cast Party to these World Premiere Performances 6 - 8pm. Join the more intimate perspective through a backstage experience; you can participate in Tech Rehearsal as Ballet ESPRIT offers a new take on a timeless classic. Join the cast on stage to learn the inner workings of the production. Then join the cast and crew for a Gala Reception with champagne and hors d’oeuvres afterwards in the idyllic riverside theatre lobby afterwards.
