Option 1: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot (non-fiction) This is the true story of Henrietta Lacks, a woman diagnosed with cervical cancer in the 1950s, whose cancer cells were subsequently used by the medical community without her knowledge or consent, to search for a cure. This book was subsequently made into a movie, so if you don’t get a chance to read the book, come for a viewing of the movie. The movie/book discussion will take place on Friday evening, October 3rd, and will be led by Sara Samuel.
Option 2: Join this summer’s Montclair Reads of the book Just Action by Richard and Leah Rothstein. This community-wide exploration delves into the history of housing segregation in the US, and discusses steps that can be taken on the local level to increase the availability of affordable housing. As the website indicates there will be multiple opportunities within Montclair to discuss this book and even meet the authors. Sylvia Cowan has arranged for a number of the available books to be reserved for UUCM members. We will have our own discussion of the book on Friday September 5th Before the September 10th date that the authors will be in Montclair.
Option 3: Here I Stand the autobiography of Paul Robeson. Haven’t you always wanted to learn more about New Jersey native Paul Robeson? What better way to start than by reading his autobiography, and joining a discussion group in October. We will discuss his autobiography and maybe watch some of his performances. Sue Raufer will be leading this discussion on November 7th in the Alliance Room.
Pick any or all of the options to join! Light refreshments will be served.
