Allen Ginsberg Centenary Film Screenings

The Writers Guild at Bloomington presents a film screening series celebrating the centenary of Beat Generation icon Allen Ginsberg. The series was curated by Joan Hawkins and Tony Brewer.
All films will be screened at the Monroe County Public Library Auditorium.

Chappaqua (1967, 82 min., dir. Conrad Rooks)
Based on Conrad Rooks' experiences with drug addiction and includes cameo appearances by William S. Burroughs, Swami Satchidananda, Allen Ginsberg, Moondog, Ornette Coleman, The Fugs, and Ravi Shankar, who composed the score.

K*ll Your Darlings (2013, 104 min., dir. John Krokidas)
Mainstream account of the college days of some of the early members of the Beat Generation (Lucien Carr, Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs, and Jack Kerouac), their interactions, and Carr's killing of his long-time friend David Kammerer in Riverside Park in Manhattan. Daniel Radcliffe plays Ginsberg, Ben Foster as Burroughs.

ALLEN GINSBERG (1926–1997) is a major poet of the Beat Generation. Copies of his HOWL poetry chapbook (City Lights, 1956) were seized by U.S. customs and the San Francisco police on 25 March 1957, provoking the cultural warfare that threatened to disrupt the placidity of postwar American suburban life. 70 years since the publication of HOWL, Allen Ginsberg is an established American cultural icon whose relevance is greater than ever.
