About this Event
Songs of the Silver Screen
Allegro's Spring concert honors the important role music plays in the creative and expressive art of movie making. Movie soundtracks not only use original scores as background music but often draw upon popular songs to help set the mood and enhance the story being shown on the big screen.
The concert begins with the classic 1937 song by Johnny Mercer and Richard Whiting from the film Hollywood Hotel, celebrating Hollywood's magical allure with its vintage big band sound. This is followed by an arrangement of the iconic orchestral theme used in the soundtracks of all 26 James Bond movies, beginning with Dr. No, produced in 1962. The opening bars of the song take us immediately into the dangerous and exciting world of international intrigue and romance that characterizes the James Bond brand.
Songs of the Silver Screen includes music from some classic movies like Singin' In the Rain and The Wizard of Oz, as well as more contemporary films such as X-Men: Apocalypse and 10 Things I Hate About You. Dolly Parton's "Nine to Five" features the Allegro's soprano and alto sections and The Beatles' "A Hard Day's Night" features our tenors and basses.
No concert of movie music would be complete without "Unchained Melody", used as the background for the haunting and sensual pottery wheel scene in the movie, Ghost or the song that ends our concert, "I've Had the Time of My Life" from the 1987 film, Dirty Dancing.
