“All the world's a stage": Chagall, Tyshler and our Own Fantasies
Dear Bay Area,
It is with great pleasure we invite you to “All the world's a stage": Chagall, Tyshler And Our Own Fantasies on October 4-6 in San Mateo.
Experience the magic of:
7 authentic graphic works by Alexander Tyshler
An authentic auto lithograph by Marc Chagall
And 100 works by California artists
While Marc Chagall needs no introduction, Alexander Tyshler, unfortunately, remains less known to many.
Tyshler's journey began with five years at the Kiev Art School, followed by the legendary VKHUTEMAS ("Higher Art and Technical Studios" - was the Russian state art and technical school founded in 1920 in Moscow)), under the guidance of masters like Alexandra Exter and Vladimir Favorsky. He later became a key figure in the “Society of Easel Artists” alongside friends Al.Deineka and Yury Pimenov.
In Kyiv, he formed close friendships with literary giants like Osip Mandelstam and Ilya Ehrenburg, and Vladimir Mayakovsky and Sergei Yesenin in Moscow, further cemented his place in the cultural milieu of the time.
The artist Robert Falk (the luminary of Russian and Soviet art) praised Tyshler as a “sweet storyteller” and acclaimed his graphics for their perfection akin to Japanese calligraphy.
Anna Akhmatova treasured her portraits by Tyshler as among the most heartfelt.
A fascinating story involves Marc Chagall. In his early years, Tyshler was an ardent admirer of Chagall’s work. Yet, when Chagall visited Moscow in 1973, Tyshler did not rush to meet him, despite having saved Chagall’s panels after the destruction of the State Jewish Theater and donating them to the Tretyakov Gallery. Chagall wrote him a note with a drawing (a face):
“Moscow 1973
Dear Alek. Tyshler
Sweet artist, we are sending you — a thank you. I don’t know how to draw now, because I am excited — Marc Chagall.”
Tyshler was also a distinguished set designer, creating the visual language for approximately 80 performances. His theatrical career began in 1927 at the Belarusian Jewish Theater in Minsk and continued through the 1930s in Moscow and Leningrad. He served as a set designer at the Romen Gypsy Theater from 1931 to 1934 and later designed for the Moscow Jewish Theater from 1935 onwards. The pinnacle of his stage design career was in 1961, when he designed the set for Rodion Shchedrin's opera Not Only Love at the Bolshoi Theater.
Although Tyshler’s true value as a master artist, painter, and graphic designer was widely recognized, he struggled to fit within the Soviet system, particularly due to the restrictions imposed by the “fifth point” of his passport. Despite numerous invitations to exhibit his work abroad—such as in England for Shakespearean celebrations, in Paris’s top galleries, and in Germany—the authorities were reluctant to let him represent Soviet art internationally. His creative achievements did not align with the principles of socialist realism, which demanded a portrayal of triumphant progress and joyful optimism.

In 2017, the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow held a retrospective exhibition dedicated to Alexander Tyshler. Today, in Southern California in 2024, we are honored to showcase his graphics, celebrating and giving him the recognition he so richly deserves.
We seek to continue this tradition of theater, acting, and surrealism.
We invited all artists who are ready to support this “phantasmagoric” theme with their works to participate.
Dear Guest!
Join us for this extraordinary journey into the surreal and the fantastical!
We will also have exhibition tours for adults and children and round table discussions. We will have a musical and theatrical program.
