The Dubuque Coalition for Nonviolence and Dubuque Be SMART for Kids will show the award-winning short documentary film "All the Empty Rooms" on Sunday, May 17, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at Carnegie-Stout Public Library in Dubuque. Admission is free, and everyone is welcome.Winner of the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Film, "All the Empty Rooms" (2025) follows journalist Steve Hartman and a photographer Lou Bopp as they set out to memorialize the bedrooms left behind by children killed in school shootings. The 33-minute short film is directed by Joshua Seftel, and is rated PG-13 for "brief strong language, and thematic material." Closed captioning or subtitles will be turned on.
The Dubuque Coalition for Nonviolence (CNV) is a local grassroots organization which seeks to prevent gun violence. Dubuque Be SMART for Kids is part of a national campaign to promote responsible gun ownership and safety in order to save children's lives. Members of both groups will invite comments and questions following the film screening, and will have informational materials available for attendees to learn more about their efforts.
