Monday, January 20, 2025 is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day! Join us for a day of action, education and resistance both online and in-person. Register at bit.ly/ReclaimMLK2025 Some have mentioned that the statue of Dr. King in D.C. looks unfinished. So is his work. So was his work before the November Election. “Out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope.” Let us continue to carry the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and that stone of hope, forward. Let us carry his full message forward, not some whitewashed narrative that denies his fight against racism, militarism, and capitalism. Let us #ReclaimMLK as we continue to fight to finish the work he and so many others started.
Too often America's favorite civil rights leader is reduced to "I Have a Dream" sound bites and his strategy of nonviolence being stripped of its resistance and direct action. We must Reclaim MLK and acknowledge the full history, broader vision, and revolutionary mission that inspired a multiracial movement for equity, equality, justice and human rights.
On April 4, 1967, exactly one year before his assassination in his "Beyond Vietnam" Speech, Martin Luther King, Jr. made it clear that all of us were responsible to bring about justice and that the fight would continue.
"Our only hope today lies in our ability to recapture the revolutionary spirit and go out into a sometimes hostile world declaring eternal hostility to poverty, racism, and militarism."
"Every man of humane convictions must decide on the protest that best suits his convictions, but we must all protest."
There are plenty more examples of the revolutionary messages of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. As we celebrate and share his words, let us remember all of his words and fully encompass his vision and mission throughout the year.
