All Hands On Deck! Re-working the Spatial Media Lab

Last year we secured a headquarters for the community to come together and collaborate on projects, exchange and share knowledge, and experiment and perform. To fulfill this vision we held meetups, workshops, and events. However, throughout the year our resources continually dwindled. To counteract, we applied for funding but unfortunately did not receive it. The space never quite blossomed and filled with community in the way we were hoping, so this has left us with only one option: a change.

This year, we will downsize the Lab from 6 rooms (ca. 200qm) to 2 rooms (ca. 80qm). With the reduced size and cost we can focus on making one of the rooms a proper studio environment by building sound treatment, and the other a proper workshop by organizing and setting up workstations. We’re taking this change as an opportunity to focus our energies on providing a high quality community resource. However, importantly, change means work.

For these changes to materialize, we need some help to get the space quickly prepared for the next stages of its life. As a community resource, we want to make this an opportunity to bring the wider audio community together to work collectively on a resource that’s available to you, the community!

First up, we are having an All Hands On Deck work day to quickly get the space re-organized and tidied up. This will take place on Monday, March 24th from 10am until end of day. We will provide food and drinks for everyone that participates, simply please RSVP here.

Remember, if you’re a member of the Spatial Media Lab, each hour you work on the space counts toward one hour free use of the space! This is a great opportunity early in the year to bank up some hours for a pre-production, research, album mix, or listening session. If you can’t join the All Hands On Deck, every day between March 27th and March 31st Timo will be working in the space making finishing touches and anyone is welcome to join. If interested in joining one of these dates contact us at [email protected] and we will coordinate with you via text.

Important note: We will not be hosting any workshops, meetups, and other events until the space is re-organized, so please come help so we can resume our regularly scheduled programming!
