All Aboard the Iron Horse Trail
About this Event
From the Pleasant Hill/Contra Costa Centre BART station, we'll "board" the Iron Horse Regional Trail and stroll to Civic Park in Walnut Creek. The Iron Horse Trail is a multi-use, whole-access trail between the cities of Concord and Pleasanton. The trail follows the old Southern Pacific Railroad right-of-way established in 1891 and abandoned in 1978.
After we "off board" in Civic Park, we'll visit the habitat gardens, an oasis for more than 25 species of butterflies and 130 species of California native plants. From Civic Park we'll stroll a few blocks to peruse the offerings at the Walnut Creek Farmers Market before we head back to the BART Station.
Transit Month is an annual tradition to celebrate buses, trains, operators, and riders that make the Bay Area's transit system amazing. Greenbelt Alliance and Transbay Coalition will be highlighting the importance of a strong public transit system and the risks the Bay Area will face without it. This is a moderate 4-1/2 mile round-trip walk on a mostly level trail.

The outing is free. If coming by car, there is no charge to park in the BART lot on weekends.

As State and Regional Senior Resilience Associate for Greenbelt Alliance, Andrew Ha supports land use and housing initiatives for a more climate-resilient and affordable future for California. Andrew brings diverse experience in advocacy, research, and nonprofit work to his role at Greenbelt Alliance, with a focus on the intersection of environmental justice and human rights. A Bay Area native born and raised in Milpitas and San Jose, Andrew holds a Master’s degree in Human Rights and Humanitarian Action from Sciences Po Paris and a B.A. in International Politics from UC San Diego. In his free time, he enjoys backpacking and collecting records from his favorite artists
Ken Lavin is the Outing Coordinator for Greenbelt Alliance and has been leading our free educational outings for over a decade. Ken worked as a national park ranger in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and as an instructor for Diablo Nature Adventures, teaching environmental science to school groups in Mount Diablo State Park.
