About this Event
For Women’s History Month, Alhambra Historical Society will present “Alhambra’s Early Women Influencers” on Thursday, March 20, 2025 at 7 p.m. at the Masonic Center, 9 West Woodward Avenue, Alhambra, CA 91801. The event is free to the general public and light refreshments will be served.
The evening’s presentation will highlight the early women influencers and entrepreneurs who shaped the Alhambra we know today including Edith Shorb, who helped found Ramona Convent Secondary School; Florence Young, renowned for her California paintings en plein air; and Norma Yocum, Alhambra’s first woman mayor.
Despite the influence that women have had throughout history, present-day history sleuths often have a difficult, if not impossible, task of finding documented information about them. Throughout history, it was considered improper for women to have any news published about themselves. Oftentimes, the only information one can find on a woman involves their birth, marriage and death, and for wealthy women, their philanthropy.
Women’s History Month provides us with the opportunity to honor and celebrate the women who played pivotal roles in our collective history.
