About this Event

Presenting an evening inspired by Alex Snider's new book Sometimes You Should Be Late: The Quiet Rebellion of Slowing Down in a World Obsessed with Speed.

What if the real measure of your life isn't how fast you run, how much you do, how 'on time' you are, but how well you pay attention to what actually matters? Drawing on stories from government, psychology, and everyday life, meditation teacher and writer Alex Snider offers a field guide for reclaiming your attention from urgency culture.

We'll linger on the patio at The Ivy Bookshop, which inhabits the former home of a meditation community, and engage in a conversation about the quiet courage to slow down. Author Alex Snider, psychotherapist Sharon Calvano, and filmmaker Pete Davis of the documentary Join or Die will be our guides. We hope you can join us.

Alex Snider is a writer, speaker, and facilitator who designs experiences that help people slow down and see themselves and others more clearly. His debut book, Sometimes You Should Be Late, is about moving through time with more intention where we center our values not the clock. He draws on 15 years in public service, including as a diplomat and in domestic policy roles, along with certifications and a decade of practicing and facilitating meditation and group processes. He is the co-founder of Mindful Fed, a cross-government mindfulness community, and writes the Substack Slow Mindfulness. His work has appeared in a variety of publications, including Psychology Today. You can find him in Washington, DC, with his squirrel-obsessed husky mix, Walnut, and at slowmindfulness.com.

Sharon Calvano is a social worker and psychotherapist based in Baltimore, Maryland. She has more than 30 years of experience helping people navigate life and its many challenges. She began her career working with both women and men in maximum-security prisons before opening her private practice in 2005. In 2021, Sharon partnered with her friend and colleague, Kim Yamas, to found Stone Soup Counseling, LLC, a multidisciplinary counseling center with two locations serving the Baltimore community. Sharon is passionate about empowering women to find their voice, advocate for their needs, and stand up for their rights. When she is not working or fighting the patriarchy she can be found either in her garden or with Colt, her gentle giant mastiff mix, and Iris, her blind and deaf cat.

Pete Davis is a writer and civic advocate — and a former student of Robert Putnam's. He is the author of Dedicated: The Case for Commitment in An Age of Infinite Browsing. He is the co-founder of the Democracy Policy Network, a policy organization focused on raising up ideas that deepen democracy.
