For the best part of thirty years, Alasdair Roberts has been following his own path through folk music. Starting out with Glasgow cult favourites Appendix Out before striking out alone, he's built a body of work that draws equally from centuries-old Scottish ballads, odd tales, forgotten histories and songs of his own that already feel like they've been around forever.
His records have always occupied that sweet spot where traditional music meets something stranger and more exploratory. One minute you're deep in an ancient border ballad, the next you're somewhere completely unexpected. Few people do it with as much warmth, wit or imagination.
On 12 July, Alasdair joins us at The Social for his only solo show of the year.
