Rum is an irrefutably global spirit and a distillery in the Cloud Forest region of Oaxaca is currently at the forefront of dynamism in the broader rum world. Alambique Serrano has been increasingly on the minds and in the glasses of rum enthusiasts the world over, thanks to the outstanding craft production of the Krassel family. This small operation out of Oaxaca has provided many single barrel offerings over the past few years, but a new precedent was set here in rum-loving Rochester as a collaboration between the brand and BayTowne Wine & Spirits. The first pot still distillate from Alambique Serrano was released unaged at still strength as a single batch pick through BayTowne Wine & Spirits, the batch named Alambique de Cobre.
A passion project for the vibrant rum community of the Rochester area, the Cobre batch was also brought in by a number of local bars with a focus on elevating rum and crafting incredible cocktails. Patrick, co-owner of Ziggy’s, is Rochester’s foremost rum maverick and he’ll be hosting a community celebration of this project at Ziggy’s on Railroad Street this August. The evening of Wednesday August 13th, Lucas from BayTowne, Nate from PM Spirits, and Patrick of Ziggy’s will present a seminar on Alambique Serrano to give an educational tasting experience of this distillery’s phenomenal work.
We’ll contextualize the Cobre with a number of their other offerings, and Ziggy’s will provide two small cocktails and some pairing bites as we learn more about these impressive rums. The class will conclude at 7:30pm and Ziggy’s will shift to a Cobre batch Alambique Serrano party from 8:00 to 11:00pm thereafter, featuring the mixing talents of several other local bar professionals.
