AIA Spokane Lunch & Learn: Specifying Exterior Wood Cladding

This course will focus on “why” wood cladding is the building material of choice for architectural specifications. The course will begin with a brief examination of the historical context of wood and go in-depth about the benefits of exterior wood cladding when compared to other building materials. The second half of this course will explore the different species of wood commonly used - including Cypress, Western Red Cedar, Alaskan Yellow Cedar, and modified woods such as Abodo, Accoya, and Kebony. We will compare and contrast the sustainability, durability, availability, and weathering characteristics of each species. Once the course is complete, architects and designers will better understand the benefits of wood as a building material and how to specify exterior wood cladding properly.
