IT IS ALMOST TIME FOR THE 2026 AIA CORPUS CHRISTI ANNUAL CODE ACADEMY!
About this Event

Please join us for the 2026 Annual AIACC Code Academy. Once again our presentation is being led by ICC - The International Code Council. This year's presentation from the 2021 International Building Code (IBC) will include two (2) different seminars. The morning session will focus on "Exit Systems" and will earn you 3 credits. The afternoon session "Accessible Means of Egress" will also earn you 3 credits. This topic will also fulfill your requried "Barrier-free Design" CEU.

There will be a lunch presentation by Stego, along with breaks throughout the day that will provide you the time to meet each of the 2026 Code Academy Sponsors and check out their products. There will also be "Door Prizes" throughout the day donated by our 2026 Booth Sponsors.

You will earn a total of 7 LU/HSW credits for the day.

We will start early with check-in and breakfast available at 8:20am. The first session from ICC presenter, George Mann will begin at 9AM. Lunch will be provided along with snacks during the afternoon and plenty of hot coffee throughout the day.

The Annual AIA Corpus Christi Code Academy is the perfect place for AIACC members, as well as other built environment professionals throughout the region to obtain the continuing education credits necessary to maintain their licensure.

Course Description:

2021 IBC Exit Systems

This seminar focuses on IBC Chapter 10 means of egress components that are defined and regulated as “exits.” These components, defined in Chapter 2, are considered as high-level elements that provide a considerable degree of occupant protection within the means of egress system. The exit discharge provisions will also be discussed. Specific topics include:

• Exterior exit doors at the level of exit discharge

• Interior exit stairways and ramps

• Exit passageways

• Horizontal exits

• Exterior exit stairways and ramps

• Exit discharge

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, participants will be better able to:

  • Determine those means of egress components that are defined as exits and part of the life safety requirements of a building’s layout.
  • Identify where exit elements are required for life safety.
  • Identify the specific exits established in the IBC for life safety.
  • Understand the regulation of the exit discharge system for life safety.

2021 IBC Accessible Means of Egress

This seminar explores the detailed provisions related to accessible means of egress systems as required by Section 1009. Defined as a continuous and unobstructed way of egress travel from any accessible point in a building or facility to a public way, one or more accessible means of egress must also comply with the applicable provisions of ICC A117.1. The relationship of Section 1009 to the requirements of the ADA Standard for Accessible Design is also addressed.

• Accessible means of egress elements

• Elevators

• Areas of refuge

• Horizontal exits

• Two-way communications

• Exterior areas for assisted rescue

• Relationship with ADA Standard

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, participants will be better able to:

  • Describe the relationship of accessible means of egress to general means of egress.
  • Determine where accessible means of egress are required.
  • Identify those elements considered as accessible means of egress.
  • Identify special features of accessible means of egress components.
  • Describe the relationship of IBC accessible means of egress provisions to requirements of the ADA Standards for Accessible Design.

LUNCH & LEARN PRESENTATION BY

PROGRAM TITLE: Protecting the 1st Side of the Building

DESCRIPTION: The course provides an in-depth look at below-slab moisture, soil gases, brownfields & contaminated sites, and subterranean termites and how to effectively mitigate these concerns with barrier solutions on various project sites and differing foundation designs. The program will examine building material failures, property loss, negative health effects, and the liability associated with the intrusion and infestation of these concerns, along with the environmental factors that are impacted by each of the issues compared to that of the sustainable solutions selected to mitigate them. Moreover, the program is designed to update attendees on the current codes, standards, and recommendations from ASTM, ACI, EPA, ICC and other organizations associated with each concern, as well as experts’ perspectives from each respective field.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

After attending the session:

  1. Participants will gain a better understanding of the different means and methods available for protection of vapor intrusion below the building, including, but not limited to, the differences between a chemical vapor barrier and a water vapor barrier.
  2. Participants will learn the science behind vapor migration below and through concrete slabs as well as into crawl spaces.
  3. Participants will gain a better understanding of subterranean termite migration and the differing means and methods available for control.
  4. Participants will learn what sustainable design, construction, and installation considerations can be employed via various, cost-effective physical barriers that ensure success.
