Autonomous systems are rapidly moving from research labs into everyday life. From self-driving taxis expanding into Washington, D.C. to the growing use of AI-enabled drones and autonomous technologies in national defense, these technologies are reshaping transportation, security, and society. As these technologies become more capable and more common, they also raise important questions about safety, reliability, regulation, and the appropriate role of humans in overseeing AI-driven decisions.
In this Pub Scholars talk, Dr. Missy Cummings, Professor and Director of the Responsible AI program at George Mason University, will explore the rapidly evolving world of autonomy. One of the U.S. Navy's first female fighter pilots, Dr. Cummings is a nationally recognized expert on autonomous systems, AI safety, and human-machine collaboration, with applications spanning autonomous vehicles, robotics, and military systems.

Speaker Bio: A naval officer and military pilot from 1988-1999, Cummings was one of the U.S. Navy's first female fighter pilots. She is now the director of the Responsible AI and robotics PhD programs and a professor at George Mason University. She holds faculty appointments in the Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Computer Science departments. She is an American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Fellow and is a member of the Virginia Academy of Science, Engineering and Mathematics.
Cummings received her BS in Mathematics from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1988, her MS in Space Systems Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School in 1994, and her PhD in Systems Engineering from the University of Virginia in 2004.
