David Siegel must have understood this on a fundamental level when he first saw 2001: A Space Odyssey. Siegel cites that experience as opening his eyes to the limitless number of ways that people and computers could interact in the future – and the infinite possibilities for what computers and technology would eventually be able to do on their own. Following a childhood and adolescence spent deconstructing, building, and teaching computational systems of all kinds, Siegel’s fascination took him to Princeton, where he studied computer science, and later to the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at MIT. His doctoral work there explored the new ways that humans and machines might ultimately engage and inform one another in the future – tellingly, one of his central projects involved getting a robotic hand to behave like a human one.
Drew Patrick was appointed as Superintendent of Schools on February 13, 2023. Prior to this appointment, Patrick had served as Interim Superintendent of Schools since May 2022 and as Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources and Leadership Development for Scarsdale Schools since July 2016. Patrick has worked in public education as a teacher and school district leader since 1998. Before coming to Scarsdale, Patrick served as Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction in Bedford, New York for eight years. Prior to his district-level leadership position, Patrick taught earth science, biology, and A.P. environmental science. Patrick holds degrees from the University of Rochester (B.S., Biology-Geology), the University of South Carolina (M.S., Geology), Bank Street College of Education (M.Ed., Educational Leadership) and Manhattanville College (Ed.D., Educational Leadership). Patrick has published works as both a geologist and as an educational leader. Teaching and professional development are focal aspects of his practice as he provides extensive professional development, both within and outside the District.
