Afternoon Tea & Talk

The Franklin County Visitors Bureau and Wandering Teacup invite you to a memorable afternoon of tea, conversation, and living history featuring Frederick Douglass and John Brown.
Inspired by the gatherings and soirees where Frederick Douglass spoke during his tours of England, Ireland, and Scotland, Tea & Talk recreates an atmosphere of hospitality, reflection, and meaningful conversation. Through the portrayals of acclaimed living historians Nathan Richardson and Doug Dobbs, guests will experience the powerful messages of Frederick Douglass and explore his relationship with John Brown during one of the most pivotal periods in American history.
Tea & Talk also serves as the public introduction to Franklin County's new Road to Freedom Trail. The trail will bring to life the county's connections to freedom seekers, the Underground Railroad, Frederick Douglass, John Brown, and the United States Colored Troops. It will be anchored by the John Brown & Frederick Douglass Statue in Chambersburg and interpretive experiences located throughout the county.
But this event is about more than history. It is about gathering together much as audiences did nearly 180 years ago, when Douglass shared his firsthand experiences and vision for freedom. These events were often hosted by community groups and supporters of abolition who welcomed guests for conversation, learning, and fellowship.
In that same spirit, Wandering Teacup will recreate the warmth and hospitality of the period with a traditional tea service featuring:
Savory Tea Sandwiches
- Ham salad sandwiches on crustless white bread
- Egg salad on steamed brown bread
- Cucumber sandwiches
Bakery Delights
Served with assorted jams and honey butter:
- Cranberry scones
- Corn gems
- Tea biscuits
Sweet Treats
- Pound cake
- Molasses spice cookies
Admission is free and open to the public. Walk-ins are welcome.
