About this Event

Hand Sewing Repairs and Upcycling

Breathe new life into your old / damaged clothes and household items by learning hand stitching skills in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

We will start the session by learning fundamental hand stitching skills, and practising those until you feel comfortable. Then you'll spend the rest of the session either repairing or upcycling something you've brought along.

Brought to you by fashion designer & seamstress Alina Koztepe, through Deaf Couture C.I.C. with funding support from Town Legal LLP. With thanks to our hosts Artizan Street Library & Community Centre.

All experience levels are welcome, and a BSL interpreter will be present.

You will learn:

  1. How to thread a needle
  2. How to start & finish a stitch
  3. Running stitch
  4. Back stitch
  5. Basting stitch
  6. How to sew buttons
  7. How to fix holes
  8. How to fix rips & tears

What to bring:

(Basic materials provided if you don't have anything to work on)

  1. Clothes or other fabric with rips/tears
  2. Stained clothes/fabric
  3. Clothes or fabric with holes
  4. Clothes which need the hems altering (eg trousers or shirt sleeves)
  5. Scraps of material to make an art piece or jewellery

Please refer to the above guidelines for what to bring, as some issues such as resizing, adding zips or anything which may need a sewing machine will not be fixable in this time.
