After5Houston - Can We Drink Our Way Out of a Water Crisis?
About this Event
A Conversation on Water, Chemistry, and the Future of Clean Water
Join a chemistry professor for Can We Drink Our Way Out of a Water Crisis?, an engaging exploration of how desalination turns seawater into freshwater and whether it can realistically help address growing water shortages. Together, we'll unpack the chemistry behind the process and examine both the potential benefits and the environmental and energy challenges of using desalination on a large scale.
What We'll Cover:
• How desalination works - Explore the chemistry behind removing salt from seawater and turning it into freshwater.
• The benefits and challenges - Examine why desalination is appealing in water stressed communities and what makes large scale facilities complicated.
• Can it be part of the solution? - Consider the energy demands, environmental concerns, and tradeoffs involved in expanding desalination.
Whether you're a homeowner interested in water solutions, curious about the science behind your drinking water, or simply wondering how communities can prepare for water shortages, you'll leave with a better understanding of what desalination can and cannot do.
