Technological advances are revolutionizing the field of marine science, as well as efforts to conserve and protect aquatic species. Environmental DNA (or e-DNA) is genetic material left behind by organisms in their environment (from the shedding of cells, mucus, feces, skin, scales, or hair), and can be used to detect invasive and/or endangered species, monitor biodiversity, and assess the health of ecosystems.
Dr. Angelina Dichiera, Assistant Professor at William & Mary’s Batten School & VIMS, will explain how eDNA can be used to detect and monitor the presence of endangered sturgeon in Bay tributaries, and help guide the recovery and conservation of these incredible “living fossils.”
