ATAJO DE NEGRITOS WORKSHOPS & REHEARSALS
Join the Seattle Atajo de Negritos!
The Atajo de Negritos is a cultural tradition practiced by African and Afro-Indigenous descent communities on the south-central coast of Peru during the Christmas and Three Kings Day season. It involves body percussion (stomping), singing and other rhythmically complex components. While this is a tradition practiced within a Catholic religious context in Peru, the teaching and practice of this dance in Seattle is purely educational. We highlight the cultural syncretism and historical resistance of these communities present in this tradition. Everyone is welcome to participate.
***The atajo de negritos workshop series will culminate with a pilgrimage slated for Saturday December 14 and Sunday December 15. More information forthcoming.
Saturdays, from September 28th to December 7, 2:30-4pm, Seattle Amistad School (1501 10th Ave E. Seattle WA 98102).
Cost: This is a community building tradition. We are asking for DONATIONS ONLY
