About this Event
Join us on Wednesday, December 4th, for the AfriKin Artist Talk: "Unpacking Blackness in Africa and Its Diaspora," featuring two distinguished artists—Cameroonian-born, Amsterdam-based photographer Angèle Etoundi Essamba and UK-based artist and frontman of The Prodigy, Maxim. The discussion will be moderated by Jamaican-born, US-based Fulbright Fellow and interdisciplinary artist Yrneh Gabon. This event is presented in partnership with Dutch Culture USA.
Angèle Etoundi Essamba is renowned for her evocative black-and-white photography that centers on the African woman, challenging stereotypical representations and celebrating strength, pride, and cultural identity. With over 200 exhibitions worldwide, her work has been featured in esteemed institutions such as MoMA and the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
Maxim, born Keith Palmer, is best known as the dynamic frontman of the electronic music group The Prodigy. Beyond his musical achievements, Maxim has pursued a successful career as a visual artist, holding solo exhibitions in London and Los Angeles. His multidisciplinary approach offers a unique perspective on the intersections of music, art, and cultural expression.
Moderating the conversation is Yrneh Gabon, a Jamaican-born interdisciplinary artist and Fulbright Fellow whose work addresses social justice issues, environmental concerns, and the African diaspora's cultural narratives. His insights will guide a profound exploration of how art serves as a medium for healing, understanding, and bridge-building across global communities.
This engaging dialogue will delve into critical questions, including:
- How do personal and collective experiences of Blackness influence artistic expression?
- In what ways can art address and heal the emotional traumas resulting from colonization?
- What responsibilities do artists have in fostering peace and understanding within and beyond their communities?
Attendees will gain valuable insights into the transformative power of art in addressing complex social issues and fostering global kinship. Don't miss this opportunity to engage with leading voices in contemporary art and culture.
