10 Week African Drumming Course with Elliott Orr
Are you open to planting some deep African grooves into your psyche?
Ensemble drumming like this can quite literally blow your mind.
Simple individual parts entwine to create a complex tapestry of totally danceable trance-inducing music.
The perfect example of the adage “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts”.
This is the ideal ‘active meditation’.

The material covered is the same on both Wednesday and Thursday nights so if you need to miss one class you can instead go to the other night in that week.
Over this 10 week course Elliott will patiently guide you towards the ability to play a powerfully healing rhythmic composition.
By the end of this course you’ll know the introduction, the various accompaniment parts, breaks and calls and we’ll even cover some solo phrases. There may even be a song!
With full respect to the traditional owners of this music, the people of Africa, Elliott will talk about the history of the djembe as well as the complexities and techniques of playing the djembe.
This course is super exciting as it culminates in a performance with Zormiwasa at the Little Big Bang West End on Saturday the 7th of December.
You may have danced to Elliott’s playing before at Island Vibe, Woodford, Earth Frequency Festival, or even at the Fortitude Hall!
He leads the African rhythm ensemble Spankinhide and performs regularly with the Palm Wine Ambassadors, Bobby Alu, Mood Swing and Chevy Bass, Ganga Giri amongst a bunch of other groups.
Both courses are 100% open to complete beginners AND also perfect for experienced players as Elliott can teach multiple levels in the one session.
There are plenty of drums to hire if you don’t have your own.
Elliott sells drums or perhaps you’d like to do a drum making workshop.

$38 casual class or $43 with drum hire
Please note, casual attendance is fine for the first 3 weeks but then the group will have progressed too far unless you have previously attained good traditional technique.
