The HCSCC and Moorhead Public Library are proud to host acclaimed Genealogist Elyse Hill. Her presentation, Beginning African American Genealogy Research - The First Steps, will focus on how to start genealogical research, as well as the nuances and ways to overcome the challenges faced by African American researchers. Following this presentation will be a workshop on how to conduct genealogical research with HCSCC and Library staff their to provide additional help. We will also provide families from Fargo-Moorhead's original African American community to those interested in helping with local research.Elyse Hill lives in Georgia but grew up in St. Paul. Her family ties in Minnesota gave her a fascination with the region’s Black pioneers. She has over twenty years of genealogy research experience and certifications from several genealogical organizations. Currently she is working on projects for the National Parks Service’s Underground Railroad Network to Freedom program. Her research into enslaved individuals who escaped to the Twin Cities has resulted in the Pilgrim Baptist Church and the Pioneers & Soldiers Memorial Cemetery in Minneapolis becoming the only sites in Minnesota to date that have been included in this program.
A special thank you is owed to Dr. Yvonne Condell for supporting Hill's appearance in our community.
