We All Have a Story: Increasing Awareness of the Self and Others in Treatment of LGTBQ+ Clients

Clients bring their stories to clinicians. Clinicians, too, carry personal experiences into their work, both consciously and subconsciously. This presentation will explore the importance of self-awareness, with a focus on the role of empathy and authentic connection in providing affirmative care to the LGBTQ+ population.

Learning Objectives:

1. Name assumptions and biases that interfere with connection and the therapeutic process.
2. Identify the origin of shame narratives specific to the LGBTQ+ population to support increased shame resilience.
3. Integrate awareness of the clinician’s personal story to identify potential counter transference in working with LGBTQ+ clients.

Building Connection and Safety through Affirmative Trauma Informed Care

This presentation will focus on integrating holistic and compassionate approaches to provide affirmative care to LGBTQ+ clients. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of barriers to care, the impact of trauma, and the role of intersectionality in treatment.

Learning Objectives:

1. Explain the importance of integrating both trauma-informed and affirmative care principles to support LGBTQ+ clients, recognizing the unique trauma-related experiences within this population.
2. Acquire practical techniques for creating a safe, affirming therapeutic environment, including how to build trust, address trauma triggers, and use inclusive language and interventions to support LGBTQ+ client’s recovery and treatment goals.
3. Integrate strategies to overcome common barriers (e.g., bias, lack of training, systemic challenges) to providing effective care for LGBTQ+ trauma survivors.

Continuing Education

Psychologists | Casa Pacifica is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Casa pacifica maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCC, & LEPS | Casa Pacifica (Provider #016190) is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and LEPs. Course meets the qualifications for 3 hours of continuing education credit for LMFT’s, LCSW’s, LPCC’s and LEP’s as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.
