Advanced Trauma Nursing Course (ATNC)- Chelsea & Westminster, 13-15/05/2026

The ATNC is a 3-day course for registered nurses, paramedics* and ODPs*. It follows the patient journey from preparing for their arrival, through the resuscitation phase of their care. It provides an opportunity to develop the knowledge, skill and attitude necessary to care for the trauma patient and is recognized as an appropriate preparation for achieving Level 2 National Major Trauma Nursing Competencies (NMTNG 2016).

This course is suitable for Registered Nurses working in trauma teams. However, to meet the educational needs of a changing workforce in trauma teams it is possible for health care professional from other groups (e.g. Paramedics and Operating Department Practitioners) to complete ATNC.

These professionals must have current registration with the Healthcare Professionals Council (HCPC) and be working as part of a hospital-based trauma team on a regular basis, with responsibilities for the ongoing care of the patient as part of the trauma call. These professionals need to be aware and accept that the ATNC curriculum will not be adapted from its core focus on training nurses to care for the seriously injured patient and their family.

Before the course, you will be required to complete the pre-course e-learning consisting of an overview chapter, 13 modules and quizzes, and pre and post-module MCQs. It takes approximately 1-2 hrs to complete each module and may take up to 30 hrs to complete the e-learning. Full completion of the e-learning is a mandatory requirement to attend the course. Participants who have not completed the e-learning in full by 7am the day before the course will not be allowed to participate in the course and will forfeit their course fee.

Course participants will receive access to the pre-course e-learning resources on the RCS VLE via notification with login details six weeks before the course.

Course participants are also required to read the ATNC (manual online only) and ATLS® course manuals in full to prepare for the assessments on the course.

You will be assessed throughout the course and must pass all assessed sessions to pass the course and be awarded ATNC® provider status.
There are interactive sessions and clinical scenario stations and your performance of practical skills and contribution to discussions which test participants’ core knowledge will be assessed throughout these sessions.

On the final day of the course you will take an MCQ test and particpate in a moulage assessment.
