Advanced Thermal Imaging Workshop for Ecologists

Back for a second year, and bigger than ever!

Following the success of last year's workshop, we're returning to Hestercombe with even more to share. Over the past year, we've worked closely with ecologists across the UK, refined field workflows, analysed hundreds of hours of footage, and deepened our understanding of how thermal performs in real-world bat surveys.

Now we're bringing these insights back to you.

This immersive, hands-on workshop is designed specifically for ecological professionals who want to confidently integrate thermal imaging into their bat survey workflow.

Whether you're new to thermal or already using it in the field, this event will help you:

• Understand how ambient temperature, surfaces and weather affect bat detectability;
• Improve interpretation for thermal footage in complex environments;
• Avoid common pitfalls and misinterpretations;
• Optimise camera setup and field positioning;
• Analyse footage with greater confidence and accuracy.

Because this is our second year holding a workshop at Hestercombe, we're building on real feedback and experience (both from last year's event and the previous season full of productive work in the field).

You'll hear from experts working at the intersection of thermal imaging technology, ecological framework, and bat behaviour and detection.

Our goal is to strengthen your confidence when working with the thermal ecology kit and help you make better decisions in the field.

You'll have the opportunity to film and analyse thermal footage of Hestercombe's diverse bat population, including lesser and greater horseshoe bats.

This live field component is designed to help you experience real-time detection challenges and learn how to interpret final footage, because nothing replaces seeing it for yourself.

By the end of the day, you'll feel:

1. More confident using the thermal ecology kit in real field conditions.
2. Better equipped to interpret footage accurately.
3. Clear about how and when thermal adds value to your survey.
4. Prepared to deliver high-quality results to clients.

Since this is a full-day event, we have prepared some niceties to ensure your comfort throughout the duration of the workshop.
