Adults with Autism Support Group: Afternoon meet-up.
About the group:
This is a local peer support group for autistic adults. A judgement free place where we can talk & spend time with each other, find others who understand our brains and hopefully make some new friends.
It is my hope that having a space to meet can give us a chance to learn about ourselves and help each other in the process; by socialising, spending time together and supporting each other.
I am looking forward to catching up with those who have come in the past and hopefully seeing some new faces too.
Cost: It is free to come along, socialise and spend time together.
In addition to the colouring and board/card games (which are free), there are also some art/craft kits available for purchase if you feel like doing something a little different. Most of them are $3 or under. Please bring cash if you may be interested in buying a kit, I’m not able to take card/electronic payment. I do have change for those who need it. And yes, you are welcome to buy them to take home if you don’t want to do them on the day.
Food & Drinks:
• There will be a kettle to use to make hot drinks, but there are only basic supplies (tea bags, normal coffee, hot chocolate, white sugar & full cream milk), so please be mindful if you have specific likes/needs, that you will need to bring your own.
There will also be cold water in the fridge.
• If I am able, I will try to bake something for each meeting, but it depends on my mental battery each week.
You are welcome to bring something for snacks if you want (for yourself or to share). This is not necessary, just those who want to.
There is a fridge if you bring something that needs to be kept cold.
About the space:
95 Saltwater Creek Road.
• This is my home, not a professional space, so hopefully it will be a bit more comfortable for those who struggle with town.
• There is a bus stop out the front. It is bus route 705. It is a 4 lane road out the front, so if you feel uneasy walking across the road alone, please just let me know and I can accompany you.
• There is parking on the roadside out the front of the house or around the corner on the grass (along Airport Drive).
• There are 2 dogs & 2 cats here. The dogs will most likely stay far away (they may bark initially, but should quiet down quickly), one of the cats will probably stay away but the other cat may want to be in the middle of whatever is happening. Please be aware for allergies and let me know if you have any concerns.
• Depending on the weather & what we decide on as a group on the day, we can either sit under the house or out in the yard.
• There is a toilet downstairs.
Rules:
• Safe space, confidentiality & privacy.
Confidentiality is essential; no photos or videos to be taken without permission.
What people share here is private and should not be discussed outside the group.
This includes sharing on social media, with friends or with family members.
This is to be a safe space where we can open up and be vulnerable without fear.
• We can 'agree to disagree’.
It is impossible for everyone to agree on everything. Please remember this.
When disagreements arise, we should agree to disagree; everyone is entitled to their opinion.
Discussions are encouraged, bullying and aggression is not.
• Be respectful of others.
This is to be a safe space, please be polite, kind and courteous.
Being aggressive or disrespectful to others will not be tolerated.
• No children to be brought to meet-ups.
This ensures the space remains focused on forming adult connections, while accommodating sensory sensitivities of group members and maximum capacities of our venues.
• Yes, a support worker/carer/person is welcome.
We do have to be mindful of venue capacity, but we want people who can’t come on their own (like myself) to be able to attend.
• You do not have to stay for the whole 2 hours.
You can arrive late or leave early, stay for 30 minutes or the whole 2 hours, or even step away and take a break if you need.
