About this Event
This course is designed for clinicians seeking a practical, up-to-date introduction to ECMO care in adult patients with severe cardiac and respiratory failure. The course will begin with 1 hour of pre-course work to provide foundational knowledge and prepare participants for the in-person session. This pre-course content will introduce core ECMO concepts, terminology, circuit basics, and key clinical indications.
The in-person portion will consist of 3 hours of interactive simulation and case-based learning focused on the bedside care of adult patients supported with ECMO. Participants will review patient selection, indications, circuit physiology, cannulation strategies, common ECMO configurations, and management considerations for key clinical scenarios including cardiogenic shock, ARDS, pulmonary hypertension, lung transplantation, ECPR, left ventricular venting, and liberation from VA ECMO.
The course is intended for non-ECMO specialists and is designed to strengthen bedside recognition, clinical decision-making, and management of ECMO-supported patients through a combination of guided discussion, faculty-led teaching, and hands-on simulation.
Proposed Learning Objectives: By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Review common indications for ECMO in adult patients with severe cardiac and respiratory failure.
2. Describe basic ECMO circuit physiology, common configurations, and high-level cannulation strategies.
3. Recognize key bedside management considerations for adult patients supported with ECMO.
4. Apply clinical decision-making principles to common ECMO scenarios through interactive case discussion and simulation.
5. Identify early concerns and complications in ECMO-supported patients that warrant escalation or further evaluation
