Industry legends, Cimarons worked with reggae-royalty Bob Marley, Toots & the Maytals, Jimmy Cliff, Lee 'Scratch' Perry and even Paul McCartney, but have been hugely under-recognised when it comes to their own music, impact and legacy. Having lost drummer Maurice Ellis to cancer, the band persists, despite decades of exploitation. Harder Than The Rock tells the story of their amazing history and follows the band’s final chapter as they dream of performing in front of live audiences again, one last time...
𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗴𝗮𝗲 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰
Formed in London in the late 1960s, the Cimarons consisted of Jamaican immigrants who brought with them the vibrant sounds of reggae, a genre that was still relatively new in the UK at the time. Their journey began by playing backing music for touring Jamaican artists, giving them the opportunity to work with reggae legends like Jimmy Cliff and Ken Boothe. Their performances in the UK introduced British audiences to reggae’s distinctive rhythms and socially conscious lyrics. As one of the, if not the, first UK-based reggae bands to produce their own music, the Cimarons were instrumental in shaping the sound of reggae in Britain. They released several albums, including On the Rock (1973) and Maka (1978), which blended traditional reggae with their own unique flair, incorporating elements of British musical influences. Their hit single "You Can Get It If You Really Want," a cover of Jimmy Cliff’s song, helped to establish reggae as a popular genre in the UK charts, signaling a growing acceptance of the music within mainstream British culture. Their music resonated with second-generation Caribbean youth who were navigating issues of identity and belonging, providing a cultural soundtrack that reflected their experiences. By the 1970s, the Cimarons had become a symbol of how reggae could flourish in a diasporic context, blending the sound of Jamaica with the realities of life in Britain. Through their work, the Cimarons also helped lay the groundwork for future UK reggae acts and contributed to the rise of subgenres like lovers rock and dub.
𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝘂𝗯 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰
The Cimarons played a pivotal role in the rise of dub music in the UK. As one of the first reggae bands in Britain to gain prominence, they helped bridge the cultural and musical gap between Jamaica and the UK's growing Caribbean diaspora. Their connection to dub music, which evolved out of the reggae tradition, is rooted in the innovative use of studio techniques to create deeper, more experimental versions of existing tracks. Dub music emerged in Jamaica in the late 1960s and early 1970s, driven by producers like King Tubby and Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, who manipulated sound with heavy basslines, echo, reverb, and delay. These techniques soon crossed the Atlantic to the UK, where reggae and dub found fertile ground within immigrant communities. The Cimarons were not only instrumental in popularizing reggae in Britain, but aso contributed to the early development of dub in the UK. Their collaborations with artists like Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, as well as their presence in the UK music scene, exposed British audiences to the hypnotic qualities of dub music. As they performed and recorded, their sound merged the deep basslines and studio experimentation of dub with live performance elements. Moreover, the Cimarons, were part of a broader cultural movement that adopted and adapted Jamaican sound system culture. This included incorporating dub techniques in their music, which resonated with the underground music scenes of London. Their work helped lay the foundation for dub's later integration into UK electronic music, particularly in genres like drum and bass and dubstep, which continue to draw inspiration from the spatial, bass-heavy aesthetics of dub.

YardVibes is an initiative of Caribbean Creativity, an Amsterdam-based non-profit organization dedicated to producing, programming, and promoting Caribbean and Caribbean-themed cinema in the Netherlands and beyond since 2008. Over the years, Caribbean Creativity has hosted over 250 screenings in Dutch cinemas and at film festivals, including numerous premieres. In 2020, when live screenings were halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they launched YardVibes, a streaming platform showcasing content from independent Caribbean and African filmmakers. Door de jaren heen heeft Caribbean Creativity meer dan 250 vertoningen georganiseerd in Nederlandse bioscopen en op filmfestivals, waaronder talrijke premières. In 2020, toen live-vertoningen werden stilgelegd vanwege de COVID-19-pandemie, lanceerden ze YardVibes, een streamingplatform met content van onafhankelijke Caribische en Afrikaanse makers.
