Addressing Chronic Absenteeism Through Restorative Practices
About this Event
PD (In-Person): Addressing Chronic Absenteeism Through Restorative Practices, Student Engagement and Relationship Building
Target Audience: Administrators, Teachers, School Staff, Behavioral Support
Description: Chronic absenteeism can feel like an entrenched, unsolvable problem — especially layered on top of poverty, transportation gaps, and housing instability that no single educator can fix alone. It's easy to feel defeated and lose sight of how much the school itself shapes whether students show up. But the research tells a striking story: when school climate declines, absences don't creep up gradually — they spike, and those spikes hit hardest for Black and Latino students. The inverse is just as powerful: schools that build real connectedness, safety, and structure for learning see meaningful, lasting drops in chronic absence.
This interactive workshop reframes attendance as something educators have real influence over. Beyond compliance-based models, participants will explore how restorative practices build the relational conditions — respect, dignity, and mutual concern — that keep students coming back, moving from a posture of power-over to power-with.
● Meet students where they are. Participants will examine modes of student engagement (Explorer, Achiever, Passenger, and Resistor) and develop strategies to reach every learner, including those who disengage quietly or push back visibly.
● Build the climate that keeps kids showing up. This session equips educators with formal and informal restorative tools for community building, daily engagement, and behavior response — the same levers research links to reduced chronic absenteeism.
Through personal reflection, peer dialogue, and collaborative activity design, participants will leave with concrete, ready-to-use strategies for the start of the school year, day-to-day instruction, and discipline situations — all centered on empowering students as active collaborators in their own academic and social growth. The message students need is simple: you are seen here, you are safe here, and this place was built with you in mind.
