Salty Urbanism: Designing for Rising Seas, Future Heat, and Resilient Communities

Jeffrey Huber, Brooks Scarpa Huber

February 10, 2026

6:00 - 7:30pm

The Pavilion, 265 S Orange Ave., Sarasota, FL 34236

Huber’s book Salty Urbanism explores how coastal communities can adapt to the growing realities of sea level rise, flooding, and climate disruption through design, planning, and policy innovation. Drawing from research and practice, Huber presents strategies that reimagine the urban edge–where land and water meet–as an opportunity for resilience, equity, and ecological restoration. The talk highlights case studies that integrate living shorelines, adaptive infrastructure, and community-driven design, demonstrating how architects and planners can move beyond defensive barriers to create environments that thrive with water rather than fight against it. By weaving together environmental science, urban design, and architectural practice, Salty Urbanism positions resilience not just as a technical necessity, but as a catalyst for more inclusive, livable, and culturally vibrant communities. Attendees will gain practical insights into how design excellence can redefine coastal adaptation for the 21st century.
