ACRYLIC ADVENTURES 2: MYSTIC MOUNTAIN
Saturday, December 5 • 1:30–4:30 PM
Artisan Santa Fe
This is the second class following October’s popular Abstract Adventure workshop! This time, we'll explore stylizing and abstracting the landscape—mountains, mesas, or any landmark that inspires you—and see how much we can simplify, transform, and make it our own. We'll build on many of the techniques from our first workshop while adding some new possibilities.
Of course, first-time students are welcome, too! Let's keep expanding your fun acrylic technique vocabulary.
We'll explore color, texture, layering, and mixed media as we create a series of small experimental paintings that work together as a diptych, triptych, or collection.
We'll revisit techniques from Module 1, including:
• Transparent color layers and acrylic glazing
• Thicker textures with flexible modeling paste
• Metallic paints and iridescent effects
• Sprayed water and other ways to manipulate paint
• Drawing, painting, and mark-making on paper, then incorporating it into collage
• Color, layering, and visual emphasis
We'll also introduce new possibilities, including sgraffito, additional modeling paste techniques, and delicate, transparent collage elements made with tracing paper and India ink.
We'll continue using many of the supplies you already have from Module 1, while adding a few new materials in a manageable way—so you can keep building your creative toolkit without starting from scratch.
I'm keeping this class small—just 8 participants—so there's plenty of room for experimentation, individual attention, and discovering your own approach to the landscape.
ABOUT ARALIA
Aralia is a mixed-media artist with decades of experience painting and working with clay. She is drawn to the tactile nature of art materials and the possibilities that emerge through experimentation, texture, and layering. She holds a BFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University (NYSCC) and has received teaching credentials in California. Her workshops offer a supportive space to explore materials, discover new techniques, and develop your own creative approach.
MATERIALS
Materials are not included. Please bring:
• Acrylic paints — Artisan 8-tube value series, Amsterdam general selection or primary-color set (or bring what you have!)
• Brushes — a basic acrylic brush set, or at minimum a 1" flat, round (approximately #20), and filbert (approximately #20); detail brushes optional
• 6+ small painting surfaces — 5" × 7" ideal; 6" × 6" or 8" × 8" also work.
We all work at our own pace, so feel free to bring more or fewer panels depending on how you like to work.
You can choose canvas or boards, but keep in mind that stretched canvases aren't as compatible with collage work. I recommend canvas panels (canvas mounted on board) or primed boards.
Think about the surface you want to begin with: canvas gives you some texture to start with, while a primed board offers a smoother surface. Choose whichever appeals to you!
• Matte gel medium — I like Liquitex
• Iridescent White — Liquitex Basics is fine
• Metallic acrylic paints — a few of your choice
• Permanent ink pen or Sharpie — extra fine
• India ink or acrylic ink — 1 bottle of any color you choose; no particular brand required
• Tracing paper or other transparent paper — we'll experiment with transparent collage techniques, so feel free to bring what you have. Consider exploring the paper back room at Artisan!
• One texture tool — choose one from the Artisan texture tool display in the acrylic section
• Small collage images and/or meaningful reference images
We'll incorporate one small collage image into each painting, so look for images around 2" or smaller. If you'd like to create your own drawn or painted elements to incorporate into your collages, bringing a reference image can be helpful as a starting point. Choose something that interests or inspires you!
• Spray bottle
• Metal leaf
If you'd like to explore additional metal leaf techniques, feel free to get Speedball Metal Leaf Adhesive Size and Speedball Metal Leaf Sealer. These are completely optional and not required for the workshop.
• Flexible modeling paste — Liquitex or similar
• Satin varnish — Liquitex or similar
If you have them, you may also bring:
• Paint palette
• Additional collage materials
• Sketchbook
• Palette knives
