Accessibility Iconathon

Noun Project is partnering with Disability:IN, the leading nonprofit resource for business disability inclusion worldwide, SVA’s MFA Interaction Design Program, and Canva, one of the world’s best-known tools for design and publishing, to host a free Iconathon design workshop dedicated to accessibility.

Today, 1 in 6 people worldwide live with a disability. Yet, despite growing awareness about the importance of accessibility and inclusive design, there is still a stark lack of visual resources dedicated to this space. In addition, many icons commonly used to depict accessible locations and experiences are often homogenous or uphold negative stereotypes. At Noun Project, we believe accessibility should be a continuous practice to ensure environments and experiences, both on- and off-line, are designed so everyone can fully participate.

During this Iconathon, we will learn about key accessibility principles and considerations, and work together to create new icons for the public domain. From "universal design" and "digital accessibility" to “curb-cut effect” and beyond, we’ll explore different ways to represent terms that fill critical content gaps in iconography.

No design or art skills are necessary, all are welcome to participate. Lunch will be provided.
