Abstract Sculpture Workshop: Plaster Molds and Personal Inspiration

Explore abstract sculpture in a hands-on workshop led by Sam Fox School MFA student Levi Walker. Drawing inspiration from Raymond Duchamp-Villon’s Le cheval (The Horse), a bronze sculpture from the Museum's permanent collection that began as a plaster cast, participants will delve into the process of plaster mold-making.

During this session, attendees will construct molds using accessible, provisional materials and various easy-to-manipulate vessels that can be cut, taped, and glued. After finishing the molds, we will fill them with plaster. The workshop culminates with the reveal of each final plaster sculpture, as participants release them from their molds.

About the Facilitator

Levi Walker is a visual artist residing in St. Louis. He is currently pursuing his MFA at Washington University. A member of the Lumbee tribe, his most recent works explore the relationship to place, space and the land through sculpture and process methods of making. Levi communicates these ideas through specific material choices and direct references to the natural world. Levi has exhibited at Vulpes Bastille, Site:2, the Kansas City Public Library’s Mountain Gallery, and Beco/KIOSK Gallery. He earned his undergraduate degree from the Kansas City Art Institute.
