Based on Alberto Moravia's novel, starring Jean-Louis Trintignant as Marcello Clerici, a repressed intellectual joins Mussolini's Fascist secret police, agreeing to assassinate his former anti-fascist professor in Paris, a mission complicated by his own conflicted psyche and an encounter with the professor's wife. The Film is celebrated for its lush cinematography by Vittorio Storaro and deep exploration of fascism, conformity, and desire.
