May/June 2026: Folklore, Maypoles and the Green Man
Join local writers – and avid readers – Cathy and Stephen Wade, for a monthly book appreciation meeting with a difference.
To celebrate the National Year of Reading 2026, Cathy and Stephen have chosen a theme for each month of the year and will discuss books linked to these. Attendees will then be invited to write something inspired by the discussion.
May/June’s session is based around Folklore, Maypoles and the Green Man, with featured books from the 1880s and 1930s and themes of the supernatural in Hardy’s Wessex and repressive religious rites in the early twentieth century.

Please note: although this is a series of book meetings, places are limited, and participants need to book ahead for each session they wish to attend. There is no obligation to attend more than one, but participants are very welcome to book on as many as they like, subject to the availability of places.
No pre-reading required. Suitable for participants aged 16 and over.
The meetings will take place either on the last Friday of the month OR the Friday before or after, at either Ashby Community Hub or Scunthorpe Central. Please check our events page for forthcoming dates and venues and register your place.
If you experience difficulties when registering your place, or have any other queries about the events, please contact us at [email protected]
