About this Event
Whether you’re completely new to spinning or looking to develop more advanced techniques, this course offers a hands on introduction to creating unique, expressive yarns.
Across four sessions, you’ll learn how to turn wool fibre into yarn, exploring different textures, thicknesses and finishes. Working in a small group allows time on the equipment and close guidance from a team of experienced spinners, knitters, weavers and dyers, helping you understand both the process and the creative potential of handspun yarn.
Dates and Times: Dates – 11th, 18th, 25th March and 1st April, 7-9pm
Your ticket cost covers all four sessions.
Week 1: Introduction to Yarn
An introduction to tools and materials, learning the basic techniques needed to prepare and create your own yarn. You’ll gain confidence through hands on practice and understand the many options available.
Week 2: Spinning Your Yarn
Building on the basics, you’ll explore how to control thickness, twist and texture. This session focuses on developing confidence in spinning while beginning to experiment creatively.
Week 3: Adding extra personality to your yarn
This session introduces more expressive approaches to spinning, and options affecting texture, colour and structure. You’ll learn about yarn recipes, create an art yarn or do some yarn dyeing to make your yarn unique.
Week 4: Finishing and Using Your Yarn
In the final session, you’ll focus on finishing techniques and explore how to use your handspun yarn in knitting, weaving or other textile projects. You’ll leave with your own unique yarn samples and a clear understanding and some supplies to continue spinning beyond the course.
