This weekend-long event is open to ALL kids, grades preschool through 12th grade, at ALL levels of chess! Whether your child is a competitive chess player or doesn’t know how to move the pieces, we invite you to join us. Meet a strong female chess master from Chihuahua, Mexico, play chess with her, and learn from her!♟️ Here’s what the schedule looks like:
Saturday, August 16 (Monroe County Public Library):
- PK-12 chess lesson (all levels welcome!), 10:30-11:30am (rooms 1B/1C)
- Taco lunch and Q&A, 11:30am-1pm (rooms 1B/1C)
- Simultaneous exhibition (she’ll play up to 20 kids!), 1-3pm (library atrium or auditorium)
Sunday, August 17 (Faith Lutheran Church):
- Charla para padres y niños “Mi vida en el ajedrez,” 12-1pm (classrooms A-C)
- Scavenger hunt, 12-1pm (outdoor field)
- Scholastic tournament, 1:30-4:30pm (classrooms A-C)
Entry is FREE for all events, including the tournament on Sunday, but you must RSVP by filling out this form in advance in order to be guaranteed a spot in any or all events. Participants who come without filling out this form may not be able to participate. Note that the simultaneous exhibition has a maximum limit of players (20 players), which will fill up quickly.

Ivette Alejandra García Morales, born in 1994 in Chihuahua, Mexico, is a prominent figure in national and international chess. She earned the title of Woman International Master (WIM) in 2013 and has represented Mexico in four World Olympiads: Turkey 2012, Norway 2014, Azerbaijan 2016, and Georgia 2018.
As a coach, she has been a key player in the development of chess in Mexico. She was appointed High Performance Technical Director of the Mexican Chess Federation in 2020, becoming the first woman to hold this position. She has also coached the representative team of the Autonomous University of Chihuahua (UACH), her alma mater, and founded the Capablanca Chess Club in Chihuahua.
Ivette has also been a commentator for international tournaments such as the Grand Chess Tour and the Candidates Tournament, collaborating with platforms such as Chess.com and ChessKid en Español. In the academic field, she holds a degree in Physical Education and has been an official coach of youth and children's national teams in Pan American and world competitions.
Her presence on social media, such as @chessivette on Instagram and Twitch, has contributed to the spread of chess in Mexico and Latin America.
